President’s Corner:

President Cutting posted the following on Facebook:  We're 40% of the way to our goal of seeing TD Bank make an annual donation to NH TU!

If you haven't heard about or haven't participated in TD Bank's Affinity Program yet, be sure to ask or stop by a branch (or call). It's easy, anonymous and there's no cost to you as it is their way to direct their charitable giving. And remember, anyone (including businesses) can participate. Just mention New Hampshire Trout Unlimited.

This is my challenge to my fellow TUers in the Granite State for the new year. I want to see us accomplish our goal of securing the Affinity Program donation from TD Bank in 2012 AND I challenge each chapter to raise $2012 for their chapter in 2012, separate from any other fundraising efforts. What do you say Pemi TU - are we up to the challenge!?

News Flash!!! Pemi Member Ray Kucharski’s book On The Waters.. The Joy of Fly Fishing has been published and will be available at our January meeting.  Congratulations Ray!

  • There are still some local watersheds that could be surveyed to assess thecurrent distribution of wild brook trout and the condition of their habitat.
  • Priority should be given to watersheds where there is enough interest to maintain momentum by local residents.
  • Fish and habitat condition data collection may lead to a list of potential restoration opportunities in the area.

“Efforts to Protect and Restore Wild Brook Trout Populations in New Hampshire” at 7pm

"Although once considered to exist in every major watershed in NH, the current distribution

of wild brook trout populations has been reduced in several areas of the state. As a surrogate

that illustrates good water quality and pristine aquatic habitats, the presence of wild brook trout

should not only be a concern for anglers, but all those who prefer clean waters in our rivers

and streams. Join Ben Nugent, Fishery Biologist for NH Fish and Game to learn about the

current efforts throughout the state, as well as what can be done at the local level to protect

                           this state treasure.”

Looking Back:

Waterville Valley’s “Casting for Kirby” was a great event. Lots of fun for both volunteers and participants.  Pemi Chapter was well represented by : T. Baldwin, A Carrillo, R. Coughlin, K. Cutting, S. & J. Hackett, R. Kucharski, M. Maxwell, P. Mccuin, T. Rosewarne, and D.Sakura.

Barry Camp Thank You -  The following note was sent by Eddie Haskell, the young man we provided the sponsorship for to Barry Camp:

“Thank you for sending me to Barry Conservation Camp this summer. Some of the

things I enjoyed about camp was the shooting, archery, biking, fishing and canoeing. I learned a

lot about survival in the wilderness and how to effect self rescues. I also learned that respect was

earned by giving respect, it’s not something that is given to you.  Thank you again for sending

me to Barry Camp.”    Sincerely, Eddie Haskell

Recent News - June 2011

Upcoming Meeting:

No meeting until September!  But stay tuned to pemitu.org for dates and happenings to be listed on our Google Calender as they come in.  As well, be sure to check on project updates which have been uploaded recently with three new picture galleries and we can now share pictures and even video through our new Facebook page so be sure to get over there and 'like' Pemigewasset Chapter Trout Unlimited to stay in the loop.

Updates:

We Have a Facebook Page!   Hello everyone.  This is Ken Cutting.  Here to report the addition of a Facebook page to facilitate chapter communication and promotion.  Look for Pemigewasset Chapter Trout Unlimited and "Like" us!  We're just getting started but I think this is going to be a great tool for our chapter.

Trout in the Classroom:  The TIC program at Alexandria Village School was featured in a Record Enterprise article last week after completing the program with brook trout obtained from Hy-On-A-Hill Hatchery in Plainfield.  The trout were released into a private pond - in accordance with a directive from NHF&G - and they hope to have a fishing derby in the fall when the students return to school!

New Hampshire Kids' Trout Camp:  I am pleased to report that we successfully saw two local students, Ben Sanborn and Robby Duquette, through the application process to their acceptance into this summer's New Hampshire Kids' Trout Camp.  While helping the boys apply we came into contact with the folks at Slim Baker Lodge who offered and agreed to sponsor both boys' tuition to the camp.  So, a big thanks to Slim Baker Lodge for their generosity.

In addition, visiting member, Tom Fay (Greater Boston Chapter), donated a large cache of old fly fishing magazines which have the boys very excited to try their hand at tying some new flies and to learn more about the sport.  Thanks Tom!  So hang on to those old magazines or donate them to your local school and/or library!

Casting for Kirby:   I just want to say that I think Casting for Kirby was a big success.  We had a nearly perfect day for the event, a great turnout and it was a fantastic time that saw a lot of smiling faces.  Thanks Ray!  And to Joyce, Steve and Mike (am I missing anyone?) who I also saw there!
